Edo Governorship Election: Eight Prophetic Warnings Primate Ayodele Gave Governor Obaseki

The outcome of the Edo State governorship election, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has left Governor Godwin Obaseki of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in an embarrassing position. The defeat of his anointed candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has raised questions about the governor’s approach to the selection process within his party.

Before the election, Primate Elijah Ayodele, a renowned Nigerian prophet, repeatedly warned Governor Obaseki against imposing a candidate on the PDP. The prophet, who had earlier predicted Obaseki’s second-term victory, issued numerous prophecies that forecasted the political setback the governor would face if he ignored democratic principles in selecting his successor.

Primate Ayodele’s warnings were clear: Obaseki’s decision to handpick Ighodalo as PDP’s candidate, sidelining other party stakeholders, would lead to failure. The prophet advised the governor to allow democracy to take its course and avoid relying on his own understanding.

One of his earlier warnings, dating back to November 2023, stated:  

*“If Obaseki calms down and allows democracy to reign, his candidate will win, but if he relies on his own understanding and undemocratically picks a candidate for PDP, they will lose, and it will put an end to his political career.”*

Further warnings followed in December 2023 and throughout 2024, as Primate Ayodele emphasized that Obaseki’s candidate would disappoint him, and political infighting within the PDP would weaken the party. He stressed that powerful forces were prepared to take over Edo State from PDP, and Obaseki’s decision to enforce his own choice of candidate would ultimately backfire.

In his prophecy, Ayodele said:  

*“Mighty hands are coming to hijack Edo from PDP, and if Obaseki allows loopholes by forcing a candidate on the party, PDP will lose out.”*

Despite these repeated warnings, Obaseki pressed ahead with his decision to impose Ighodalo as the party’s flagbearer, which alienated key figures within the PDP, including his former deputy, Phillip Shuaibu, and other stakeholders. This move, coupled with election malpractice, contributed to the PDP’s loss in the governorship race.

Primate Ayodele continued to caution Obaseki that the APC was strategically prepared to take over the state, and that PDP’s chances would only improve if they re-strategized and properly negotiated with influential figures. He further warned that election malpractices might give APC the upper hand, which eventually unfolded during the election process.

One of his final warnings before the election, shared just a day before the polls, echoed this sentiment:  

“Victory is for PDP, but if they don’t wake up, APC will steal it from them. Asue Ighodalo must wake up to avoid an election embarrassment.”

With APC now in power in Edo, Ayodele’s prophecy that the state would suffer under APC’s administration may also be something to watch in the future.

Governor Obaseki’s failure to heed these prophetic messages serves as a cautionary tale for politicians who disregard spiritual insight. Whether or not the prophecy about Edo’s future under APC will come true remains to be seen.
