A devastating case of domestic violence has left a community in shock in Shreveport, where a 31-year-old man, Shamar Elkins, allegedly killed eight children—seven of whom were his own—before being shot dead by police.
According to officials from the Shreveport Police Department, the incident occurred early Sunday morning around 6:00 a.m. on West 79th Street. The victims, aged between 3 and 11 years, were reportedly shot inside a residence after the suspect first opened fire on a woman outside.
Police spokesperson Chris Bordelon confirmed that two adult women—believed to be the children’s mothers—sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving treatment. A teenager also suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities described the crime scene as extensive, spanning two homes on West 79th Street and a third property on nearby Harrison Street. During the attack, one victim managed to escape and alert authorities, prompting a swift police response.
Elkins fled the scene but was later tracked to Bossier Parish, where officers engaged him in a pursuit. He was subsequently shot and killed by law enforcement, bringing the incident to an end.
Investigators say one of the eight children killed was a cousin of the suspect’s children, adding another layer of tragedy to an already horrific event.
The motive behind the killings remains under investigation, as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances leading up to the attack.
