The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced the sighting of the new month of Shawwal in some parts of Nigeria on Saturday night.
This significant announcement confirmed that this year's Eid-el-Fitr celebration is on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
The Sultan made this declaration in a live broadcast on the National Television Authority (NTA) on Saturday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The sighting of the new moon of Shawwal is a crucial event in the Islamic calendar, signaling the start of Eid el-Fitr celebrations.
Eid el-Fitr is a time of joy, gratitude and thanksgiving for Muslims worldwide. It’s a day to come together with family and friends, share meals, and exchange gifts. The celebration also emphasizes the importance of charity, particularly the obligatory Zakat al-Fitr, which helps those in need partake in the festivities.
As Muslims in Nigeria prepare to join their brothers and sisters across the globe in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, they will gather for special prayers, known as Salat al-Eid, and engage in various acts of charity and kindness. The Sultan’s announcement has brought joy and excitement to the Muslim community, marking the beginning of a new month.
Meanwhile, earlier on Saturday, the authorities of Saudi Arabia have declared that the moon has been sighted which officially laid to rest the speculation about when the holy month of Ramadan 1446 would come to an end. And this was later confirmed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar.
