Wailing, gnashing of teeth characterized the fire incident that occured at Abule Egba, Lagos on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The incident happened around 4 pm, and left almost the whole section of the sawmill destroyed, leaving only a few planks unburnt.
According to an eye witness account, the cause of the fire was as a result of power surge from the high tension wire which affected the transformer in the market.
"We just heard a very loud sound, 'gbuaaa', before we knew it, the sawmill has been under fire. It started exactly 3.48pm. And we have since been calling Fire Service station, but their officials only arrived when the damage has been done. The place has been completely burnt. Even, a mechanic workshop was also affected, leaving about 11 vehicles burnt to ashes.. The fire would have affected the buildings around if not for the presence of some guys around here that who quickly pushed some vehicles away and started pouring water mixed with detergent from different directions. The situation would have been worse than what you met now. But we thank God, no life was lost in the incident."
One of the plank dealers who identified himself simply as Rasak said, "Most of us don't come today unless we have appointments with customers. As for me, I was at home when they called me that the sawmill was on fire, but before I got here, all my what I have gathered to sell till June have been burnt. I'm left with nothing now. I don't even know where to start from. It's pathetic.I was told it's from electric cable that sparked and affected the whole area. We have not been having light since about three days, only to bring it and destroyed the whole market. Government should please, come to our aids because what happened wasn't our fault."
Our correspondent also succeeded in speaking with the owner of the affected auto-mechanic workshop, Mr Monsuru Alimi who spoke with us in an emotion laden voice, "I don't know what to say. I'm confused. As you can see, almost all the vehicles in the shop have been burnt, the least among the 11 vehicles is worth N3m. So, you too can estimate how much I have lost into the incident. And most of them belong to my customers.
