Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, all Health workers in Ekiti State will on Monday, this week embark on 3-Day warning strike to express their displeasure over the State Government nonchallant attitude towards their welfare.
This will be coming six days after doctors in Ekiti State under the aegis of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) withdrew their services from the public hospitals with the exception of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).
The health workers made this known in a letter to the State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, which was dated July 3, 2020, a copy of which was made available to WazobiaReporters.
The aggrieved health workers said three letters were written to Governor Fayemi last month, with no response to any of the letters.
The warning strike is billed to commence at 12 midnight tomorrow and may lead to an indefinite strike action at its expiration should government failed to meet the demands of the workers.
“Our ultimatum letters dated 3rd of June, 8th of June and 24th of June 2020 respectively refers.
“The leadership of the Ekiti State chapter of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) and Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) met today, 2nd July 2020 and ruminated over our requests in respect of our challenges in the public health sector.
“The leadership of the Joint Associations and Unions of Ekiti State Health Care Workers frown at the lukewarm attitude of the State government towards our request which has not been acceded to by the State Government.
“Having exhausted all the necessary means and procedures to avert this impending strike to no avail, the leadership of the above named Associations and Unions therefore painstakingly ressolved and declared a 3 Day warning strike effects from 12 midnight on Monday, 6th July 2020 to press home our demands.
“Above all, our Unions and Associations may be forced to embark on indefinite strike action at the expiration of this 3 Day warning strike if our demands are not considered,” the letter dated July 3, 2020 read.
It should be recalled that as a result of the strike action embarked on by doctors in Ekiti State, the 19 General Hospitals, three Specialist Hospitals and more than 100 Healthcare Centres scattered across the 16 local government areas have been without doctors since June 30, 2020.
The medical practitioners had accused the government of neglecting the health sector, acute shortage of manpower, unpaid arrears of three-month-salaries, backlog of unpaid allowances, non-implementation of agreements on hazard allowances, poor working tools, among numerous others.
With all Health Workers embarking on strike by 12 midnight tomorrow, all public health institutions in Ekiti State will stop functioning
