Come June 22, 2020, the die will be cast as to who will be the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo state.
From all indications and
according to political watchers, the battle between the national chairman of the party and former Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole and his godson, the incumbent governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki will likely result in the scenario that played out in the politics of godfatherism in Lagos state in 2018 between the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the then governor of the state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode with the latter losing out, at the end of it all, to the new governor of the state, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu believed by many to have been a favoured candidate of the Jagaban, as Tinubu is also popularly known. Sanwo-olu defeated Ambode hands down in the direct primary election popularly adopted then by all the party faithful in the state except Ambode and his loyalists who were so few compared to those on the sides of Asiwaju Tinubu and other party leaders in the state.
In fact, the primary election that eventually rested the political career of the then Governor Ambode was second to none in the country. It was more or less a replica of gubernatorial elections in other states.
Political pundits then could correctly and effortlessly predict the direction where the pendulum would swing as the chants of Sanwo-olu, Sanwo Eko overnight became the item on the lips of many residents of the state, including non party members.
This, however, gave Sanwo-olu a smooth ride to Alausa since May 29, 2019 when he crushed the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) candidate, Jimi Agbaje, in a landslide victory.
The political game which turned out in favour of Sanwo-olu has since silenced his predecessor (Ambode) who was then accused of running a Mafia and Psudo democratic government, allegedly abandoning the ladder that took him up the stairs.
The chartered accountant turned politician who obviously stepped on many toes has now gone moribund politically as his name has stopped ringing any bell whatsoever in the political circuit, especially the APC which he's still a card carrying member. All because the Epe, Lagos born politician failed to identify the difference between politics and governance.
It's, without being illogical, that the same axe is very much likely to fall on Obaseki who has started tolling the line of Ambode without learning from his avoidable defeat and disgrace in the hands of the power that be.
Since things have fallen apart between Oshiomole and Obaseki months back, and centre has refused to hold till date which eventually led to the party dividing into two factions in the state, and with Oshiomole garnering support as the national chairman of the party daily, equally with the adoption of direct primary come June 22, 2020, Obaseki will likely end up the way of Ambode and whoever is nominated by Oshiomole with the support of the national leader of the party will eventually emerge the torchbearer of the party in the next governorship election in the state.
